Welcome to Ballyfermot STAR

Support Treatment Aftercare and Rehabilitation

Ballyfermot Star is a community response to drug use. We provide non-judgemental support, guidance and education to drug users, their families and the community, enabling them to cope with and over come the effects of drug use in their everyday lives.

"I felt ashamed and isolated and blamed
myself for my son being a drug user
The men's group has shown me that it is
not my fault. I'm just sorry I did not
come earlier. I have made great friends

"There is a huge amount of knowledge
and experience in the group.  There
are parents that have dealt with drug
users in their families and I am
learning from their experience."

This is the newest project of Ballyfermot STAR, housed in a purpouse-built facility on Drumfinn park to the rear of
our premises on 7 Drumfinn Park.  The facility was built through the Equal Opportunities childcare Programme and
is presently being funded through the office for the Minister of Children. Réalt Beag provides an Early Learning Centre
catering for thirty six children on a full time basis and a total of forty children on a seasonal basis. The children range
in age from three months to five years. We are providing supports for parents and for grand parents who are primary
carers for their grandchildren to enhance their skills   The centre models best practice in childcare enabling parents
to learn ways in which they can cope better with challenging behaviour.  The intention is to break the cycle of drug
use within families.

It is hoped that this service will develope over the next few years offering an important outreach service, an after
schools project , and a siblings and children of drug users youth project.

Ballyfermot STAR offers a separate support programme for Cocaine drug users We have identified this particular
target group as needing a number of different supports which also begins with the developement and
implementation of an individual care plan.  All new service users are presented with a take away starter pack.

Réalt Nua is our education and training programme for drug users in recovery.   It is based in its own building in Park
West Business Park.  This education and training programme is is supported through the FÁS Special Community
Employment Scheme.  There are forty eight participants on the programme, all with a history of drug/alcohol misuse
living in the Dublin 10 Ballyfermot area.

The philosophy of Réalt Nua is to support each participant to reach their full potential.  Participants identify their short,
medium and long term goals through the developement and implementation of an individual care plan which addresses
their drug/alcohol misuse, educational and family needs.

Réalt Nua has also developed a Peer Support Group - an aftercare group for people in recovery.  This group supports
members to stay connected to their recovery process.  This group also influences policy developement within the
organisation as well as locally and nationally.
